On most homesteads where Hens are left to free range, there often is no problem of chickens trying to escape the coop. Although we let our hens have pick of the land (4.5 acres to roam) they still try to fly over fences to neighbouring farms. Just the other day my one hen was sitting on the top of an eight foot fence! Not sure how she managed to get up there. Anyway I came to the conclusion that I must clip my chickens wings to deter them from flying fences. This process is painless, just like clipping your finger nails or hair, and actually quiet simple to do.

When searching for chickens for your homestead it often can be overwhelming as there are so many breeds out there today! When I choose a chicken breed I often look for one that is very gentle, docile and happy living in a backyard chicken coop. I also make sure it is generally a very healthy, hardy chicken that will withstand our winters sufficiently (down to -20 Celsius). Depending on what you intend to use your chickens for these are my top 3 picks!
